WE ARE THE PEOPLE´S THEATRE!
In 2009 the theatre company Heimathafen Neukölln launched a new folk theatre in Berlin´s most multi-cultural district- Neukölln. With the motto WE ARE THE PEOPLE´S THEATRE and a diverse program of theatre productions, concerts, lectures and new show formats, Heimathafen Neukölln has given the district of Neukölln a new lively voice - made up by a crossover of styles, genres and cultures.
In 2007 Heimathafen Neukölln hoisted its flag for the first time in an empty corner bar on Richard Strasse, then in 2008 in the deserted former post office on Karl- Marx-Strasse - until April 2009 when Heimathafen Neukölln set anchor permanently in a beautiful, historic Ballroom of Rixdorf.
Popular folk theatre and Neukölln have always belonged together. In the 1910´s the former entertainment district Rixdorf outside of Berlin stood for unsophisticated entertainment. "In Rixdorf , there´s music " was not only a well-known song of the time, but a way of life that attracted many Berliners on the weekend to the working class district.
Heimathafen Neukölln would like to bring some of that flair back to the neighbourhood, by digging up old Berlin folk plays and reinterpreting them for today but also listening to the stories of today and bringing them onto our stage. Together with our neighbors at the Neukölln Opera – we would like to represent a new and different cultural heart of Berlin.
And above all we want to create a place, where Berliners and visitors can feel at home. A place with a creative clash of genres- drama, youth projects, musical theatre, shows, children's theatre, balls, concerts, parties, poetry slams, local fashion shows, boxing events and much more ...
